Characters I wish I could write

I'm Baaaack.

I’m feeling a bit scattered at the moment because in an effort to make sure I’m producing something, I’ve managed to arrive at various stages in three projects. The next in the “Save the Seven Glades series, another Lily and Lux story and a new one.

And yes now I’m writing a blog, let's hope practice makes perfect. I’ve also heard that you get better at writing if you read. That brings me to the reason I’m writing today. I want to tell you about the books, authors and characters I love. Why, I hear you ask would I be interested in that? Well, because it may help you find your next great read, this is as good a place as any and in some small way it might contribute to the good vibes and praise that authors deserve and are due after days, weeks, months and years toiling for us. Selfishly because I need to analyse why these Authors, characters and books are so compelling to me and this is how I do that.

I read a lot, I’m currently reading Patrick Rothfuss, he is the new King. His world is so vivid, if you're a fantasy novel kind of being, then these books are for you and you'll thank me endlessly for mentioning them.

I don’t just read one genre as I’m sure is similar to most of you. So this post might become a bit of a serial. I’m going to tell you about my five crime and mystery faves. I’ll do the first one now and the next one or two next time, until get to the end of the list.

I’m not putting them in any particular order because I if I could only have one, I couldn’t choose to save my life.

They are:

Adrian McKinty. Crime novels (Irish)

James Lee Burke. Mystery novels

Ken Bruen. Noir Crime fiction

Robert Crais. Detective novels

Michael Connelly. Detective novels, Crime fiction

Here we go…

My first Thank you, goes to Adrian McKinty, for Michael Forsythe and Sean Duffy, you know when you ask people who would they ask to dinner living, dead, real or fictional? These three … the last two are more real to me than most living people because Mr McKinty writes such complete characters, they have all the light and shade of any live person I know.

I go from apprehensive when I start because Sean’s always into some kind of trouble, feeling every fear, because they’re dear to me now, Sean and Crabbie. Then I'm bereft for days when it ends because there’s no more checking in to see what they are up to. I’m so attached to these characters now reading Sean Duffy or Michael Forsythe is like being at a family gathering and getting the news on the escapades of highly endangered, wayward relatives that you’re a bit embarrassed about but fiercely proud to be related to all the same.

I particularly liked Dead I well may be and Gun Street Girl, I got my hands on a copy of Police are at the Station and I can't promise to do any adulting until I've finished it.

Thanks for stopping in, happy reading and writing.

M
